Arguably the most successful comic book movie sequel of all time, Superman II set a high bar for future adaptations. If you're looking for a "review" in the traditional sense, then let me just say I love this movie. This video, however, is a "review" in the literal sense (using the Miriam-Webster definition "a retrospective view or survey"), in that I'm going over the history of the film and it...

    You're failing to look at this within the context of its time. I saw Terminator back when it first came out and my first thought was "They're ripping off Outer Limits". It's more than just the concept, but also the mood of the future scenes, and the fact that this concept just wasn't that common back then. Today, there are so many more people in the world, so many more creators working a concept in various ways, but, back then, not so much. Ellison had a good case. Did he deserve to win? Well, there's also the matter of a low budget sci-fi movie from around the same time period, also about a being from the future, this one a bonafide cyborg, traveling back in time to assassinate someone in an attempt to change a future where machines rule. Look up "Cyborg 2087".

    As a kid, I thought the 1962 version was the best. When I matured, I realised just how little I'd understood of the 1981 TV version, which is far superior. The triffids aren't anywhere near as prominent as the name of the programme makes you think and many of the characters don't even seem to give them a single thought. The pure dread that is present through the entire series is mainly from humans.

    I think I understand the Outer Limits episode. They're doing a contrast between the two soldiers. One has the good fortune of being treated kindly and with trust and so he overcomes his genetic training for war whereas the other one got stuck in the mud, or the past, and so wasn;t as fortunate. Also, the abrupt ending is meant to be a warning call for the Americas - the cold war and nuclear annihilation!

    I don't think the clunky ending was anything to do with Harlan Ellison. The original story has a very different ending. It was probably imposed on HE by the producer and unless he wanted another fist fight, he had to go along with it.

    I did kinda like Soldier, though I agree that the episode doesn't so much end as just stop. Disappointing. Ellison did so much better with Demon With a Glass Hand. Which Ellison ALSO claimed Cameron stole to make Terminator, and ITS connection was even more tenuous than Soldier!

    The original theatrical cut of Superman II is vastly superior to Donnor's godawful what-if. It proves how editing can ruin a great film. Superman II definitely follows in the same tradition of better than the originals. Superman II, Batman Returns, Temple of Doom, Terminator 2, Aliens, Catching Fire, Rocky II, Rambo: First Blood Part II and Predator 2 are all examples of superior to the original. Which is saying a lot, since the first movies in each of those franchises are excellent. But these sequels are undeniable.

  • @rsacchi100
    @rsacchi100 День тому

    Yes, do "The Time Tunnel". It was a different time. The concept was to get him into an ideal family situation and he will become a normal person. Logical for the early '60s. Still tenuous and ridiculous but this angle is closer to what Terminator II was doing. I like that they have a reasonable time frame pass, not something that happens over a couple of days. This is one of those cases where an hour long episode might be too short.

    I agree the lawsuit was dubious at best. The only defence for Ellison I can offer is there's no clear way to differentiate between "Ellison's Idea" and "Common SF trope." Does Heinlein get credit for any series using powered battle armor? It's an excellent episode, but I agree it's a bit, well, jerky and stops when they run out of time.

    On the one hand, yay, onto season 2! On the other hand, as much as I love watching old Outer Limits episodes, season 2 has even more uneven, pull-out-of-your-ass wacky plot devices than season one. In the first season, I thought this characteristic of the show was often a plus, but in it's second season, they really pushed credibility to the breaking point. While there are a few S02 episodes that are broadly lauded, (and a couple I personally like quite a bit), I think the series could have probably ended respectably after one season.

      I think the explanation was that each time they were shifter to another time, the process meant they and their clothes were automatically restored to the condition they were in at the moment they first entered the tunnel. So the clothes wouldn't be any dirtier or become ragged, and they wouldn't have to shave or get haircuts.

    Cameron said that the studio just wanted to settle the nuisance suit with Ellison and as a result, he had been forbidden to speak about it for a period of time. I... can truly say, in all the decades of watching Superman II, I never interpreted Zod's "So...this is Houston" to mean they actually landed in Houston. It comes from a misunderstanding of hearing the communications between the astronauts on the moon and NASA com in Houston. They think Earth is called Houston until they're corrected on it. Though, to be fair, there's a lot of debate on where Texas actually lands in terms of the South or Midwest, in and of itself. But I definitely don't get _actual Houston_ vibes from a small farming town set like that.
